Internship | Literature review studying satiety hormones with ex vivo and in vitro intestinal models

About this position

Writing a literature review will you give deeper insight into a key aspect of gut health, namely the regulation of satiety by intestinal hormones. The data and knowledge gathered in the review are of great value to the research group and helpful in shaping future experiments and writing publications about intestinal satiety hormone release using TNO gut models.

What will be your role?

Gastro-intestinal (GI) hormones play major roles in the regulation of food intake, gastric emptying and GI motility. Upon stimulation by nutrients, enteroendocrine cells that are distributed along the small and large intestinal tract secrete satiety hormones such as glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1), gastric inhibitory polypeptide (GIP), peptide YY (PYY), and cholecystokinin (CCK). Over the recent years, these hormones have been identified as therapeutic targets in diabetes and obesity. Although drugs like Ozempic (semaglutide) have been developed, alternative approaches are needed that are easier to administer and accessible to everyone. The identification of natural food ingredients that modulate intestinal satiety hormone release could revolutionize how we approach weight management and diabetes management. In order to identify such ingredients, preclinical testing using intestinal research models is required. In this internship you will write a literature review about ex vivo and in vitro intestinal research models available to perform satiety hormone research. Topics to address can include advantages and disadvantages of current models, needs of ingredient developers in preclinical testing, impact of the complex intestinal environment like the nerve system or the microbiome etc. The time and length of the internship can be adapted to the needs of the students university requirements.
You will become part of a team of approximately 15 researchers and technicians. The internship can be performed at our research location in Leiden or (partly) from home.

What we expect from you

  • The time and length of the internship can be adapted to the needs of the students university requirements for doing a literature review internship.
