We supply the sustainable and innovative paints and coatings that our customers, communities - and the environment - are increasingly relying on. Our world class portfolio of brands - including Dulux, International, Sikkens and Interpon - is trusted by customers around the globe. We're active in more than 150 countries and have set our sights on becoming the global industry leader. It's what you'd expect from a pioneering paints company that's committed to science-based targets and is taking genuine action to address globally relevant challenges and protect future generations.

Play a key role in forward-thinking experiments within a well-resourced laboratory environment.

AkzoNobel is a global leader in Paints and Coatings. This success is based on the highest levels of research and innovation. Central to this research capability is the Technology group in which several Expertise Centers work on future coating concepts. In this group the Expertise Center Waterborne (ECW) works on challenging research projects aiming at developing new and innovative waterborne concepts for the global Paints & Coatings market.

Within this context, your mission in this role is to assume technical responsibility for the planning and execution of experiments and the reporting of results and conclusions. Working under the supervision of a Project Leader you will make an essential contribution to new and environmentally responsible waterborne paint concepts while deepening our understanding of waterborne paints and coatings.

Is this a challenge that matches your profile as a proactive, flexible and organized self-starter who can get on with projects either autonomously or based on an outline brief? Do you have a strong understanding of, and a passion for, new technologies and the research possibilities they offer? Have you gained the perception skills to notice changes and developments during experiments? Above all, are you eager to learn, grow and make a difference within our dynamic, multinational and multicultural business environment?

If you offer all this and more, we invite you to apply for the role of

This role and the ECW are based at our major site in Sassenheim, the Netherlands. Your core task is to conduct formulation and technical work in the lab, effectively balancing priorities in line with the departmental research plan. Thus you:

  • Draw up the necessary hypotheses.
  • Take a critical view and discuss deviations and unexpected results to the project team.
  • Document lab results in the lab notebook and report outcomes to the Project Leader and peers.

Needless to say, you spend significant time in the lab and you make yourself familiar with all relevant characterization techniques, e.g. mechanical and chemical techniques. It is imperative that you take the initiative and ask appropriate questions to clarify requirements, expectations and critical performance parameters.

At all times you work safely and observe good laboratory practice and safety standards.

Candidate profile

To apply for this position you must possess the following attributes:

  • A Bachelor's (e.g. HBO) degree.
  • Ideally you have experience with waterborne paints/coatings formulation, testing methods and tools.
  • Interested in working with non-standard problems and exploring new topics.
  • Critical attitude to assessing the set-up and results of experimental work.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills including strong written and verbal English.

Our offer

We offer a fascinating international environment that rewards your skills and enthusiasm. In addition to a good salary, you can expect excellent terms of employment including group insurance, 8% holiday allowance, travel allowance and an above industry standard number of vacation days plus a fixed bonus.
