Description

Structural Engineer in the Structures Section of the Structures, Mechanisms and Materials Division, Mechanical Department, Directorate of Technology, Engineering and Quality.

The Structures Section provides functional support to ESA projects and carries out technological research and development (R&D) in the fields of mechanical systems, structural design and verification, manufacturing, structural dynamics and the application of lightweight structures.

In your first assignment as Structural Engineer, you will report to the VEGA Launch System and Engineering Manager and focus on the launch system ground and flight environment as well as the overall verification activities.

Duties

Reporting to the Head of Section and within the technical fields described above, your main tasks and responsibilities will include:


• participating in feasibility studies for the preparation of specifications and analysis of industrial proposals;
• providing functional support to approved spacecraft and payload projects, as well as conceptual and feasibility studies in relation to all aspects of mechanical systems and configuration, structural design, static and dynamic analyses, fracture control and mechanical testing;
• identifying critical development problems and assisting in their resolution, including the evaluation of complete mechanical systems;
• performing structural analysis as required to support the development of structure subsystems;
• participating in major reviews of spacecraft, launchers and payloads;
• establishing and evaluating specifications for the development and qualification of spacecraft system and subsystem structures with respect to defining requirements for environment-induced loads, model development philosophy and relevant verification methods;
• participating in the definition and execution of Agency standards and technology R&D programmes with special emphasis on mechanical system and configuration aspects, lightweight structures, structural dynamics and advanced structural materials technologies;
• supporting activities related to structural integrity, the evaluation of loads during the life of the structures and their impact on overall verification, including the establishment of specifications, design, analysis, inspection and testing;
• supporting concurrent design activities regarding mechanical systems aspects;
• monitoring applicable scientific and technological trends and maintaining state-of-the-art expertise.

For the initial assignment as Structural Engineer, your duties will include:


• leading the systems engineering technical activities and ensuring the industrial follow-on required to ensure the timely achievement of all key development programme milestones in the domains of ground and flight environment, in particular dynamic, aerodynamic and aerothermal:


o contributing to the relevant trade-offs with launcher system impact;
o identifying the technical requirements and assignments within your area of responsibility, including evolutions;
o producing statements of work for industrial procurements in your area of responsibility;
o assessing industrial proposals;
o monitoring the timely implementation of the industrial activities at prime contractor and, if necessary, subcontractor level in your area of responsibility;
o reviewing industrial deliveries produced for all reviews at system and, if necessary, subsystem level in your area of responsibility.


• leading the systems engineering activities and ensuring the industrial follow-on required to ensure the timely achievement of all key exploitation programme milestones in the domains of ground and flight environment, in particular dynamic, aerodynamic and aerothermal:


o supporting production, mission preparation, operations and flight exploitation in your area of responsibility;
o assessing flight anomalies in your area of responsibility;
o assessing the impacts of Engineering Change Proposals in your area of responsibility.


• implementing systematic flight data analysis and monitoring flight-relevant key characteristics.
• devising the verification plan and maintaining verification control of ESA launcher system requirements.
• carrying out systematic exhaustive reporting on the status and criticalities of the activities in your area of responsibility and identifying the corresponding risks and risk mitigation actions for implementation in your area of responsibility.

Background in the design, development, assembly, integration, testing and acceptance of systems for space transportation applications

Knowledge of other technical domains interfacing with your area of responsibility

Knowledge of space system development and Product Assurance standards

Knowledge of project risk management


Education

A master's in aeronautical or mechanical engineering is required for this post.

Additional requirements

• Applicants should have at least five years of professional experience and have demonstrated the ability to lead technical activities in the launcher system area.
• Strong analytical skills and ability to interact with industry are essential requirements for the post.
• Direct experience in the development of VEGA-related products would be an asset.
